In the era of cycling shorts, pussy-bow ruffles paisley-print silk-chiffon shirts & vests, in came the 90’s phenomena – bucket hats!
Living in a world where Fila dad sneakers were the craze, it came as no surprise that bucket hats are finding a place on hat racks worldwide.
Introduced to heads in the 1900s, bucket hats had a sole purpose of function only, worn by fisherman & farmers, the wide brim worked as protection from the rain. Cue the ’60s, where the mod movement, pushed buckets hats from function to fashion. Soon after arrived the ’80s, where the hip-hop community were quick to see its potential. Fast-forward to the ’90s, we saw buckets hats in cult-like movies & tv-shows. Note: Mia Thermopolis in the Princess Diaries or Carrie from Sex and The City .
No doubt the expansive nature of fabrics, cuts, prints, colours & brands allowed bucket hats to be worn at the beach or a cheeky pizza date.
Despite its undecided reputation , we’ve seen an uproar of unambiguous looks flooding our feeds with renditions on how-to work with this 1900’s trend. Be it your standard stiff cotton, denim or tweed, bucket hats serve no longer as a purposeful item.
Would take it out for an afternoon of rollerblading & ice blocks?
