Every year I write down my goals for the next 12 months & what my personal, physical & mental intentions are. One of the many goals this year is to achieve good skin. Since my early twenties I have battled with reoccurring acne on my cheeks, sometimes on my forehead & jawline.
But what defines good skin?
The rise of comparison culture on social media has heavily influenced me to believe good skin was free of pimples, pigmentation & dairy was consumable on the daily. I’ve tried my fair share of products recommended by ‘skin-fluencers’, dropped oodles of money on creams, lotions, cleansers and masks. Not only that, I have read every blog & book on how to achieve the ‘skin of your dreams’. However, the recent rise of skin-positivity has shed much needed light on what ‘real’ skin looks like & somewhat eases the pressure of trying hard to find the perfect remedy for ‘perfect’ skin. When I scroll through my feed & see a person flaunting acne, body hair or pigmentation, I feel a sigh of relief. Knowing that it’s okay to have a little bump or pimple is a refreshing change of pace. But I also questions as to why someone’s else’s pimple makes my pimple seem okay? I should be okay with or without.
It is almost like starting a new relationship where you work on understanding each others love language. Be it quality time or acts of service, there is a clear conversation & mutual understanding on how the other person gives or receives love. For the past eleven years, I have been a tough journey to understand my skins love language. I am now at the final stretch of my 20s & to be honest its a constant journey of learning, trying, applying & changing.
Reflecting on my skin trajectory, I’ve seen short-term results but relapsed soon after. I’m on a journey now to find long-term solutions to not attain absolutely pimple-free skin but manage my skin for it to look healthy and hydrated. My skin goals tie in with focusing on wellness as a whole, reminding myself to focus on my mental & physical health, to give my body the love, rest & rejuvenation it deserves.
Whats working for me now:
- CeraVe Moisturising cream
- La Roche-Posay gel foaming cleanser & SPF 50+
- A healthy helping of fruits & veggies
- Sleep
- Working out
- Putting myself first
The main purpose is to feel good no matter what skin you’re in.
